The Uzhhorod Theatre will stage the world-famous play by Karel Wittlinger.

On Friday, April 5th, the Zakarpattia Regional Music and Drama Theatre of the brothers Yuriy-Augustine and Yevhen Sherehiy from Uzhhorod will be guest performing at the National Theatre Košice. On the Small Stage of NDKE, they will present the production "BETTER STAY DEAD" (КРАЩЕ ЗАЛИШАЙСЯ МЕРТВИМ) based on the globally successful play by German playwright Karel Wittlinger.

Love, fear, drama, and a touch of madness! How? When all loved ones and friends have long buried the hero and he is still alive? Hans doesn't expect a warm welcome. After all, his death is more convenient than life... Karl Wittlinger wrote a tragicomic absurd comedy, which is a story of a soldier who survived many years in captivity, and upon returning home, it turned out he is unnecessary to everyone.

The production based on the globally successful play by German playwright Karel Wittlinger, "Do You Know the Milky Way?", which was also successfully performed on Broadway in America, and Slovak director Miloš Pietor adapted it into a television film in 1974 with Igor Hrabinsky in the title role, was staged by the Uzhhorod Theatre even before Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The production, directed by Merited Artist of Ukraine Mykhailo Fishchenko, has gained even more relevance in recent months.

The performance shows the absurdity of human life, as audiences observe "a lunatic in the asylum" and themselves become presumed patients in the madhouse. The dramaturgical intention, with the reincarnation of three actors every 5 to 10 minutes into new scenes, requires considerable professional sensitivity.

The hosting of our friends from Uzhhorod is based on "Memorandum of Cooperation" signed in August 2023 by Andrej Šoth, the General Director of NDKE, and Rudolf Dzurynets, the director of the Zakarpattia Regional Music and Drama Theatre of the brothers Yuriy-Augustine and Yevhen Sherehiy from Uzhhorod.

The performance will be presented in the Ukrainian language with Slovak subtitles.
