After a world premiere in 1874, a critic writing for the Viennese newspaper Morgenpost wrote: “... in the box of the Theater an der Wien one can get the most beautiful seasickness, since on the ground floor, enchanting tones curl, by the orchestra with conductor Johann Strauss. Everything here chirps, makes music, sings and warbles like in the middle of spring."
